Zertifikat Deutsch (B1)

By passing the Zertifikat Deutsch (ZD) examination, you demonstrate solid basic skills in German that will enable you to cope linguistically with all important everyday situations. This examination, which is recognised around the world, shows that you have mastered the main grammatical structures and are capable of understanding and taking part in routine conversations. You are also capable of describing simple matters orally and in writing, and understanding texts on general topics.

The ZD is well known throughout the world and is appreciated by both private and official employers as proof of a solid knowledge of the German language. In Germany, ZD is an accredited proof of knowledge of the German language allowing to obtain German citizenship.

Requirements:
To take part in the ZD exam, you should have participated in 400 to 600 45-minutes-lessons. In Goethe-Institutes situated abroad, taking part in the examination does not require participation in a course, whereas in Goethe-Institutes within Germany, only participants of a language course are allowed to take the exam.

1. Written Exam (duration: approx. 150 minutes)

  • Reading comprehension
    Short texts, longer texts such as reportages, reports, specialised texts and advertisements
  • Language Elements
    Testing of knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, comprising:
    • personal and semi-official letter
    • formal letter
  • Listening comprehension
    Dialogues, conversations, interviews, short texts
  • Written expression
    You write a private or semi-formal letter using predefined specifications - a written reply on a given letter or advertisment

2. Oral Exam (duration: 10 minutes for preparation and approx. 15 minutes Exam each group of two)

  • Interview - dialogue
  • Conversation - dialogue
  • Discussion - dialogue
