Zertifikat Deutsch für den Beruf (B2)

This certificate shows that you have the necessary German skills to cope with everyday business situations. You can understand basic texts on business topics, handle routine correspondence and react appropriately in everyday discussions within the workplace.

Due to its orientation towards professional life, the examination disposes of increasing authority in industry and commerce.

Developed in cooperation with Weiterbildung-Testsysteme GmbH (WBT).

Requirements:
To take part in ZDfB you should dispose of knowledge of the German language corresponding to the level of Zertifikat Deutsch (ZD) and additionally have taken part in 100-120 45-minutes-lessons of ZDfB.In Goethe-Institutes situated abroad, taking part in the examination does not require participation in a course, whereas in Goethe-Institutes within Germany, only participants of a language course are allowed to take the exam.

1. Written Exam (duration: approx. 180 minutes)

  • Structures and vocabulary (duration: approx. 40 minutes)
    • Exercise 1:
      You will get a specialised text "Fachtext" (approx. 200 words) with 15 gaps. You will decide which words fit in the gaps (multiple-choice exercise). This is a vocabulary-training exercise.
    • Exercise 2:
      You will read a specialised text (approx. 200 words) with 15 gaps. To each gap you will do one multiple-choice-exercise; you will decide which word fits in the gap. In this exercise, your knowledge of German grammar is tested.
    • Exercise 3:
      You read a letter (approx. 100 words) containing mistakes of grammar and orthography. You will do ten exercises.
  • Reading comprehension (duration: approx. 40 minutes)
    • Exercise 1:
      You read a newspaper article (400 words) and decide which out of ten statements are right/wrong. In this exercise, your comprehension of the essential information of the text is tested.
    • Exercise 2:
      You will do five exercises concerning a newspaper article (approx. 200 words). You will take short notes of the contents given. In this exercise, your understanding of single pieces of information is tested.
    • Exercise 3:
      You will get a text for reading comprehension (eg business letter, company-internal text) of approx. 300 words. You will do five multiple-choice exercises. Here you can prove that you have grasped the most important information given in the text.
  • Listening comprehension (duration: approx. 40 minutes)
    • Exercise 1:
      First, you will listen to a message left on an answering machine, then to an extract of a conversation on the phone. Then you will take notes of the telephone conversation and fill in a memo form. You will listen to each text two times.
    • Exercise 2:
      You will listen to two or more conversations. You will solve five multiple-choice-tests referring to information given in the text. You will first listen to the complete text, then a second time with the text split into short sections.
    • Exercise 3:
      You will listen to a radio broadcast consisting of extracts of an economy magazine. You prove that you have grasped the main information given in the text. You will judge which out of ten statements are right/wrong. You will first listen to the complete text, then a second time with the text split into short sections.
  • Correspondence (duration: approx. 60 minutes)
    These two exercises show that you are able to write letters concerning professional life in German.
    • Exercise 1:
      You answer a business letter. In your letter you will use given information and text modules.
    • Exercise 2:
      You write a business letter of approx. 100-120 words. The situation as well as some key words you have to work on will be given.

2. Oral Exam (duration: approx. 20 minutes)

  • The oral exam consists of three parts. You have 15 minutes to prepare for the exam, in parts 2 and 3 you may take notes. You may not use a dictionary. In the oral exam you show that you are able to appropriately express yourself in standard situations of professional life.
    • Exercise 1:
      In the first part of the oral exam you present yourself. You will get a list of keywords you can refer to.
    • Exercise 2:
      You will explain a graph or a statistical chart. You will describe them in detail and will answer questions given.
    • Exercise 3:
      You will lead a conversation with your examiner and take on a certain role. You will be given the situation you are in and keywords of the arguments you should use for playing your role.
